Angela ’ s Seafood Restaurant , Margate www . angelasofmargate . com
Voted the no . 1 seafood restaurant in Kent on Tripadvisor , Angela ’ s is a small sustainable seafood restaurant serving delicious , ethically sourced seafood , alongside simple , seasonal vegetable-based dishes .
Their philosophy is an uncomplicated one . They will always consider people and our planet first , working directly with growers , fishermen and suppliers who understand how to make the most of their produce and at the same time minimise the impact on our environment . They spend a lot of time researching the removal of all plastic from their supply chain , from dairy , vegetables and oil , to fish to salt , which are all now delivered with almost zero plastic .
They have also partnered with the wonderful Windmill Community Gardens in Margate to turn their food waste directly into compost – in their own composting machine – to enable the Windmill Community Gardens to produce more of their raw and organic ingredients ... helping to close the loop on their business .
The Snack Shack At Dungeness Fish Hut , Dungeness www . dungenesssnackshack . net
A family business serving delicious beach food to take away and made from their own fresh , sustainably caught fish and seafood .
All their fish is caught by their own boats ; they have two small inshore fishing boats ( the Annalousion and The Doreen T ) fishing from the beach at Dungeness . Their food is freshly cooked to take away and changes depending on the day ' s catch .
They always have their fish baps and their homemade fish cakes on the menu , but dishes will vary throughout the seasons . Lobster and crab rolls are a best seller and they try to get these on the menu as much as possible .
The ethos of their venture is to sell their own fresh , local fish in a tasty unpretentious manner with a strong emphasis on sustainability and traceability – they certainly aren ’ t concerned about the food miles clocked up since everything they serve is quite literally caught a stone ’ s throw away . If you turn up when the day ' s catch gets in you ' re likely to be served up a very tasty treat which is literally just out of the water .
The Square Fish Cafe , Lenham www . thesquarefishcafe . co . uk
With a daily specials board and a ‘ catch of the day ’ showcasing the freshest bounty from the Kent coast , the focus at The Square Fish Cafe is on quality ingredients where flavour is king .
When it comes to their ingredients , provenance and sustainability are hugely important to them . They ’ re conscious of how their supply chain impacts the environment and their ethos is to use local ,
sustainably-sourced produce from within the county where possible .
Fresh veg is provided by L . R . Smith and Sons at Ringlemere Farm in Sandwich , their fish and seafood is fresh off the trawlers in Folkestone and Rye and their real dairy ice cream is from Taywell ’ s in Paddock Wood .
Sankey ’ s , Tunbridge Wells www . sankeys . co . uk
Sankey ’ s is a family run fishmongers with the restaurant and bars , The Seafood Kitchen at Mt . Ephraim and The Old Fishmongers on The Pantiles , all in Tunbridge Wells . They have a simple rule , which is they do not buy any seafood that comes from any supplier that cannot prove its produce comes from a sustainable source .
However , even this isn ’ t enough . They have become obsessed with ensuring that our seas and oceans remain the best source of food and to do that they must treat it with care . They are of the belief that this can only start “ on the front line ”, in their restaurants and on their high streets . So to do their bit they set up the “ Buy One , Set One Free ” campaign with The National Lobster Hatchery .
This means that when you buy and eat a lobster at Sankey ’ s , they put a brand new baby lobster back into the Cornish sea !
