Summer has finally arrived and as we reach the peak months for hot weather , most of us will be out enjoying the sunshine , whether that ’ s at the beach , in the garden or just during our daily routine ! Some of us love to soak up the rays and catch a tan and others prefer to seek the comfort of the shade and a cool breeze , but no matter how you choose to take the heat , it is important our hair doesn ’ t suffer from environmental factors .
No matter the colour or texture of your hair , all hair types can be damaged by the sun . The science behind sun damage lies in the fact that sun rays act in the same way as bleach on the hair , by reacting with melanin , the pigment in the make-up of the hair , which removes the colour in an irreversible chemical reaction . The keratin in your hair can also be damaged by the sun , meaning the hair protein and cuticle is even more vulnerable in the heat . This unfortunately means that harsh rays , general heat damage and salty ocean or chlorinated pool water can be even more of a threat to your luscious locks .

‘ I use biodynamic hair products at the salon . This is the healthiest and easiest way to get amazing results whilst invigorating your hair without all the harsh chemicals often used in generic products . However , in order to protect the hair from UV rays , salt water and air , I have a more specific regime .
‘ After lounging in the sun or swimming , I would recommend the use of Oway ‘ After Sun Hair and Body Bath ’ ( oway . it / en-gb ) which will help with free radical damage . Follow this up with the Oway ‘ After Sun Hair Mask ’, this will repair and nourish the cuticle . This product will also strengthen the hair and it is super easy to use .
‘ Before going out in the sun again after the shampooing and mask , I recommend using Oway ‘ Sunlight Serum ’. This will create a shield from the sun and water exposure as well as being instrumental when it comes to styling your hair and giving it strength and shine .
‘ Some very simple extra precautions you can take in hot weather include wearing a sunhat or scarf to avoid sunburn and remembering to only use artificial heat when necessary . There is no need to over-dry hair with a hair-dryer as it will dry naturally in warm weather .’
