naïveté , there ’ s also something about nostalgic behaviour – fashion , clothes , movies , music – that serve as a transitional object .” Forgotten Delights is so much more than just a story about a woman who cooks recipes from a 1968 cookbook . It ’ s a story of a woman living in the 21st century who finds comfort in the nostalgia of a time gone past and whose commitment and imagination to do something for the sheer fun of it , stands out . In an era where life feels driven by speed , profit and immediate results , Georgie has created a rare abyss from our daily lives ; where human connection and doing things for the simple love of it can be championed .
This does not mean the journey is always the most pleasurable and Georgie has found herself eating things she ’ d rather not have to eat again .“ The ingredients are often heavy and quite sickly to eat .” She says . “ I feel the focus is more on the aesthetic than on the ingredients but that ’ s part of the process – comparing foods of the 60 ’ s to the ingredients and the foods we use today .” Georgie is by no means a trained chef . A self-professed lover of food and half French , good food has always been a central theme in her life , but this project has really tested her knowledge and skills in cooking . From making choux pastry – “ As with anything in life that scares you , I resolved to throw myself into it head ( and wooden spoon ) first ” – to sauteed kidneys . The latter of which had one of her instagram followers upon reading how she ’ d cooked them , politely enquire whether she had remembered to ‘ prepare ’ the kidneys correctly , “ you should remove the outer membrane , inner white core and soak them in regular milk or buttermilk .” Georgie replied to him , “ No I didn ’ t … that explains a lot . Thanks for the tips … though I can ’ t say I ’ ll be cooking them again .”
The tale of Forgotten Delights is an adorable journey of passion , fate , trial and error , and two women who thumbed their way through the same cookbook . Maybe they lived parallel lives or perhaps they ’ re leagues apart , but one thing unites them – as it unites us all – that we are all thumbing our way through something ; trying to get it right , covering up mistakes , hoping to give others something to enjoy or throwing it all in the bin and starting again tomorrow .
As with every great story , the most exciting part of this one is what is going to happen next . Georgie can ’ t tell us yet about what is in the pipeline but she promises it is far more exciting than anything she could have imagined when she started this adventure .
Will Georgie ever find the person who wrote the cookbook ? What will she be like ? Will they be similar ?
The final page in this beautiful tale is yet to be written and I can ’ t wait to read it .
