at creating something visually engaging , “ I wanted the instagram aesthetic to reflect the colourful history of the sixties ” she tells me .
Georgie decided to cook each recipe , documenting the process and with each post , reference the music , film , fashion and story of what was going on in Britain , on the date when the original recipe was written , “ I dive into the world of what would have been happening in Britain at that time ; celebrating the music , film and fashion of that era .” she reveals .
Photographing the page of the recipe she ’ ll be cooking from , Georgie gives a sense of the person who wrote it through their handwriting and the occasional note in the margin . She then photographs the ingredients , films the process and arrives at the grand finale – the finished dish and her opinion about it . She sets each post to a song from the sixties and gives relevant historical and cultural references throughout .
In just over 6 months of starting the project and thousands of followers later , Lauren Laverne from Radio 6 had heard about it and invited Georgie to tell the story on her radio show ; “ Lauren loved the project and what I am doing .” explains Georgie . This attracted even more followers and media attention and Georgie ’ s story went on to be published and spoken about in media outlets such as , The Daily Mail ’ s Style Magazine , Radio 4 ’ s Women ’ s Hour and the leading global media company focused on young women , Refinery29 , to name but a few .
“ I just started this as some fun and it ’ s always a bit unbelievable that strangers take interest in something you have created but it is also incredibly flattering ,” she tells me , “ At the core of the narrative , this is essentially a story of human connection and I think as humans , we often look back into the past ; whether it ’ s to reconnect with a loved one or to reconnect with a moment in history . Anyone can relate to this .”
The project particularly connected with people during lockdown , and not simply because people had more time on their hands . The story of Forgotten Delights offers people comfort and hope because human beings naturally reach for nostalgia during a time of crisis . According to Dr . Stoycheva , a clinical psychologist specialising in traumatic stress : “ Trauma takes away our grey areas . It divides our timeline into a before and an after .” She explains further ; “ And while it has danger of creating this longing for the before , when things were maybe safer , and when we were unaware of all this and protected by our
