IN ASSOCIATION WITH
48 Hours on KENT ’ S CREATIVE COASTLINE CONT .
LUNCH Jump in the car and head along the coast to the fantastic pub on the beach , The Zetland Arms ( www . zetlandarms . co . uk ), in Kingsdown , nr Deal . The view across St Margaret ’ s Bay is spectacular and you ’ ll find local ale and a lovely home-cooked menu , including fish caught just off the local coastline . After lunch , make your way to our next seaside town , Margate , part of the Thanet District .
AFTERNOON Whereupon in Folkestone the foundation for change lay in manifesting a nice place for creatives to live and work , in Margate , the regeneration model was to attract creatives by launching a statement institution , The Turner Contemporary ( www . turnercontemporary . org ). Named in recognition of the landscape painter , J . M . W . Turner , who went to school in Margate and revisited throughout his life , the contemporary art gallery stands proudly coastside . Turner himself once said , ‘ The skies in Thanet , are the loveliest in all of Europe ,’ and the backdrop to the modern white gallery makes us agree .
The gallery will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year and marking the occasion with some special exhibitions and installations soon to be announced . One of our favourite long term exhibits in both Folkestone and Margate , are the cast iron statues by Antony Gormley . Designed to explore the meaning of being human , Gormley has created these ‘ still and silent ’ beings , designed to be placed within the ‘ flow of lived time .’ Gormley ’ s Margate statue emerges from the sea and stands alongside the gallery . It poignantly looks out towards the horizon , as if contemplating its next step , all while the tide ebbs and flows around it , like life itself .
DINNER In-keeping with the theme of humanity , head to Angela ’ s ( www . angelasofmargate . com ). Their ethos is fiercely local and sustainable – even their tables are made of compressed plastic . Michelin describe them as ‘ simply a good meal ’. There ’ s no meat on the simple , chalk-board menu , just local and sustainable fish alongside a vegetarian option . The cooking is refreshingly simple and it was voted , The Tripadvisor 2020 Traveler ’ s Choice , with a rare fully 5 star rating .
LATE NIGHT Just a short walk from Angela ’ s is The Glass Jar ( www . theglassjarmargate . co . uk ) A husky , low lit , chesterfield-sofa-kind-of-place with a large menu of in-house cocktail creations and resident DJs at the weekend . Stumble the short walk home from our pick of where to stay .
