COLOUR AND LIGHTING

When choosing artwork for a room , consider the colour scheme and atmosphere ; dramatic , dark , neutral or minimalist – what are you hoping to achieve ? Use the palette to either match , contrast or pinpoint particular tones in the space – this is where personality will shine through ! Be inspired by other collectors , gallery or museum spaces ; experiment with different arrangements . If you ’ re starting out , consider choosing the colour scheme based on the artwork , position the piece ( s ) in the room first and allow the rest to flow .
“ Opt for a cohesive colour palette to tie artistic shelf arrangements together . The great thing about display shelves is they can be changed at any time , giving you the freedom to try new shades each season . Soft pastels can be incorporated for a spring update , or forest green and burnt orange hues to signify the arrival of autumn .”

Always consider lighting , and treat every medium individually . Photographs , depending on the light intensity , should be glazed with a UV protective to ensure no lasting damage is done . Generally though , it ’ s best to keep artwork away from natural light to avoid colour fade ; if the space is bright consider buying something less expensive . Play around with artificial down and up lighting for the best finish , and for sculptures try positioning lights in several places , in turn enhancing the piece from all angles . Express yourself through the space , experiment with colours and lighting , and create a space you ’ ll never want to leave !

“ Consider the feel of the room when choosing art . Are you creating a relaxed space with muted colours ? Maybe a landscape or seascape would work well here ? Or are you creating a vibrant space for entertaining ? A colourful abstract or still life could enhance the room .”
