THE DOG AT WINGHAM
Having come under new ownership in October 2016, The Dog At Wingham has undergone a complete refurbishment and is fast becoming a firm favourite with locals and visitors from further afield, so I was keen to find out exactly what was on offer.
The original 1661 building is a mix of quirky and modern and the welcoming atmosphere is complemented by oak beams, cosy fireplaces, and striped floorboards with stylish decor. There are two bar areas, offering a selection of branded and craft beers, gin bar with over 30 gins, and an excellent wine list. There is a main restaurant area, and a second more private area for social gatherings and family Sunday roasts. This area can accommodate parties of up to 20 people in each of the two rooms.
There are eight luxurious en suite bedrooms all having been refurbished and decorated to an extremely high standard by owner Marilyn Bridgen. All rooms are individual, ooze style and boast an eye for detail throughout, with monsoon showers in each bathroom adding to the luxury.
Chef Dan Johns has put together an everchanging and exciting menu offering plenty of choice for whatever mood you are in. It brims over with local, seasonal offerings and is changed on a regular basis to keep it fresh. There are set menus, à la carte menus, tasting menus and for 2017 a monthly Dining Club, offering special nights like Game with Wine Pairing, Oyster & Crab, Lamb Evenings and guest chefs.
The lunchtime menu is excellent value from £ 12 for two courses or £ 15 for 3 courses. Starters include black pudding and duck egg with kale, superbly presented; chicken Caesar croquette with a smoked onion mayonnaise, which is delightful – a perfect combination of crunch on the outside and oozing with delicate chicken flavour on the inside. The mains on offer include top-notch pork belly and venison with classic flavours – both heaven on a plate. Or, bavette of beef, the most flavoursome of meats delightfully cooked and presented, and fast becoming The Dog’ s signature dish. For dessert is chocolate cremeux with homemade honeycomb and peanut ice cream, or the caramelised apple cake with blackberry sorbet.
There is an excellent and dedicated team of staff, from attentive waiters to passionate chefs and caring management; you ' re sure to receive excellent service and attention from all at The Dog who are certainly setting the benchmark for quality food, attention to detail and superb value for money. Be sure to visit soon.
