WESTERHAM BREWERY
WINS TWO GOLD
MEDALS AND ONE BRONZE
MEDAL AT SIBA SOUTH
EAST INDEPENDENT BEER
AWARDS 2019
Westerham Brewery took home two gold medals in the
Classic Premium Bitter and the Bottle/Can Speciality
Medium to Dark Beers categories, as well as the bronze
medal for Overall Champion of the Bottle/Can
Competition at the SIBA South East Independent Beer
Awards, which took place at the Tonbridge Juddians
Rugby Club last month.
The gold medal marks the seventh gold medal for Audit
Ale in 11 years. Meanwhile, Wally Winker’s Death by
Chocolate (released as a special earlier this year) received
its first awards: a gold medal in the Can/Bottle Speciality
Medium to Dark Beers category, and a bronze medal in
the Overall Champion of the Bottle/Can Competition.
Audit Ale is a strong ale, brewed to the 1938 strength
and using the same ingredients as the original best-
selling bottled beer of the Black Eagle Brewery, and has
a smooth warming flavour with notes of rich dried fruit,
raisins and molasses. Wally Winker’s Death by Chocolate
is a triple chocolate stout, brewed with chocolate malt,
cacao nibs, vanilla essence and chocolate essence. The
stout has rich chocolate and vanilla on the nose, with
plenty of coffee and chocolate on the palate followed by
a medium dry finish.
“Judges had a tough job separating the pack as the standard
was extremely high once again,” said Ian Fozard, SIBA
chairman. “The winners from the SIBA competition are
officially the best independent craft beers in the UK;
something brewers should be extremely proud of.”
HEVER CASTLE WELLBEING CENTRE AND WATERSIDE VENUE
OFFICIALLY OPEN
A tree was planted to mark the opening of the Hever
Castle Health and Wellbeing Centre and The
Waterside bar, restaurant and terrace on Friday
28th June. Peter Guthrie, one of the owners of Hever
Castle, planted an Acer tree at nearby Hever Castle
Golf Club to mark the official opening of the two
new areas.
The new dining area at Hever Castle Golf Club
looks out onto a scenic pond and fountain from a
decked area for 50 people, as well as soft seating for
around 20. Golfers and visitors will be able to enjoy
a refreshing drink throughout the day, or a tempting
meal from the new menu that includes many healthy
options, while overlooking the stunning new outside
area at breakfast or lunchtime.
The Waterside restaurant complements the new
Wellbeing Centre at Hever Castle Golf Club which
opened in April, operated by Hever Health Ltd.
The centre includes five treatment rooms offering
osteopathy, physiotherapy, beauty and massage, as
well as a range of yoga, Pilates and paracise classes.
Scented shrubs and soft lighting carries the wellbeing
theme into the garden area.
Former Hever Castle gardeners, Ian Roots and
Catherine Pooley have been behind the
transformation of The Waterside with Ian’s company
Roots Landscaping & Gardening. Ian has 20 years
of experience in the landscaping industry with
13 years at Hever Castle and Catherine achieved
her RHS diploma during her employment with
Hever Castle.
