TOTALLY SHREDDED FITNESS
IN 2013, DEAN HEITMAN REALISED THAT THE GROUP EXERCISE
AND FITNESS MARKET WAS FLAT. HE FELT THAT CLASSES HAD
NO ENERGY OR SOUL, SO HE CHOSE TO DEVISE A HIIT (HIGH
INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING) CLASS THAT WAS UPBEAT AND
FRIENDLY WITH A SLIGHT TWIST. LARGELY INFLUENCED BY
DRUM AND BASS AND HOUSE MUSIC, HE CHOSE TO DEVISE
THE CLASS AROUND THIS MUSIC AND USE A SERIES OF COMBAT
MOVES AND HIIT ROUTINES TO DEVELOP TOTALLY SHREDDED,
A HIGH-ENERGY EXERCISE CLASS THAT’S EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE
FOR FAT BURNING AND WEIGHT LOSS. WE HAD A CHAT WITH
DEAN TO FIND OUT MORE.
What does a Totally Shredded
session involve?
Each session starts with a full body warm up
followed by four main sections involving HIIT,
combat and plyometric moves. Each round is
repeated three times with an active recovery
in between rounds allowing the participant to
give their physical best.
What else would you recommend we do
to keep fit?
I’m a massive advocate of healthy eating and
I believe that what you eat affects your daily
life. Find yourself a fitness class, or, if you feel
intimidated by gyms and community exercise,
get yourself out walking or jogging. It’s about
keeping active – with movement and exercise
comes not only a healthy body, but a healthy
mind too.
What’s your favourite work out?
A simple HIIT workout on a treadmill. It lasts
for 20 minutes and I run at 80 per cent MHR
(maximum heart rate) for one minute then
slow the treadmill down and walk for one
minute for ten alternating rounds; it leaves
me sweating from head to toe. Beginners
should start with a 30 second run followed by
a one-minute walk and repeat ten times.

Best music to work out to?
My chosen music to train to varies – if I’m
working really hard, I love drum and bass, and
normally use this when teaching HIIT or
training personally, but if I’m lifting weights
doing strength and conditioning work I enjoy
listening to hip hop.
Why did you decide to become a fitness
instructor?
To help and advise people about how they
can get fitter and healthier. I’m very passionate
about it, so it doesn’t feel like work to me, it
feels like a hobby that I love. I get to work with
the best and most influential people in the
fitness industry and every day I’m learning
more skills to develop myself. I’ve trained as
a personal trainer and have worked with
aspiring figure competitors, athletes and many
other pro sports people. What more could you
want from a job?
What’s next for Totally Shredded?
Totally Shredded will continue to grow and
get better during 2018 – we have a brand new
supplement range coming out, which will
include whey proteins, super greens and many
more fantastic health supplements. We’ve also
released a bespoke fitness clothing range for
both men and women called Totally Solid and
Totally Sassy. We are looking to recruit more
instructors to teach the Totally Shredded
concept either in the community or in gyms
and I’ll be teaching at national fitness events
and promoting the brand further. The icing
on the cake will see the release of a home
workout DVD towards the end of the year and
our first one-day fitness event, ONE, which
will host the best and most up-to-date fitness
classes and the UK’s number one fitness
presenters.
