Hauntingly beautiful songs like “Close to You” and “We’ve Only Just Begun” made Richard and Karen Carpenter international superstars. Soprano Rebecca Robinson and pianist Mark Heller are appearing at the Gulbenkian Theatre with a captivating show that charts the meteoric rise to fame of the brother and sister duo. The show reveals the turbulent lives that lay behind the glamour and success, culminating in Karen’s untimely passing in 1983 from Anorexia. This memorable and moving performance pays tribute through song, story and footage. Intimate piano and vocal arrangements showcase The Carpenters’ musical legacy in all its poignant beauty. 7.30pm.
