A NEW VISION FOR ST EDMUND’ S SCHOOL
Schools rarely stand still. The best ones continue to refine, adapt and improve, making thoughtful changes that reflect the needs of the pupils they serve.
That thinking sits behind the next stage of development at St Edmund’ s. This month, the school will introduce a new academic structure, with pupils progressing through Junior School, Foundation, Senior School and Sixth Form. Alongside continued investment across the campus, including a dedicated Sixth Form Centre and new learning environments, these developments create a clearer identity for every stage of a pupil’ s education while ensuring each phase is supported in the most appropriate way.
The journey begins in the Junior School, where children from Pre-Reception to Year 6 benefit from an environment designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and confidence from the earliest years. Alongside specialist teaching, Forest School and a broad, enquiryled curriculum, significant investment is enhancing the experience even further. Four new classrooms for Pre-Reception to Year 2, a dedicated STEM teaching room, a refurbished playground and exciting new outdoor learning and play spaces are creating exceptional environments in which children can learn, explore and thrive. As part of a three- 18 school, Junior pupils also benefit from access to outstanding facilities and opportunities across the wider campus, laying strong foundations for the years ahead.
One of the most significant developments is the introduction of Foundation, bringing Years 7 and 8 into the Senior School. From their first day, pupils become part of the wider Senior School community, benefiting from specialist teaching and the breadth of opportunities on offer, while also enjoying a dedicated Foundation experience. With its own head and deputy head of foundation, specialist Key Stage 3 pastoral care, dedicated Year 7 and 8 spaces within the Academic Hub and a curriculum designed specifically for this age group, Foundation provides the support and confidence pupils need as they take their first steps through Senior School.
As pupils move into Year 9, they progress naturally into the next phase of Senior School, where increasing academic challenge, broader subject choices and preparation for GCSE study become the focus. By giving each phase of education its own identity, the school is creating a structure that reflects the different stages of a young person’ s development while maintaining the continuity of a single school community.
Supporting the final stage of a St Edmund’ s education is the development of a dedicated Sixth Form Centre. Designed to reflect the experience of post-16 education, the new centre will provide spaces for independent study, collaborative working and social interaction, creating an environment that supports both academic success and preparation for university, apprenticeships and future careers.
Together, these developments reflect a wider vision for St Edmund’ s- one that brings together thoughtfully designed learning environments, a clear academic structure and the dedicated people who support pupils at every stage of their education.
For nearly 280 years, St Edmund’ s has continued to evolve while remaining true to its values. This latest development is another step in that story; a thoughtful progression that will benefit both current pupils and future generations.
