Veterans Enrolling in Record Numbers
Texas Southern University
continues to see a rise in the
enrollment of military veterans
on its campus. Currently there
are over 500 military veterans
enrolled in programs ranging
from business, political
science, law, pharmacy/health
sciences, communications
and education. Compared to
360 in Fall 2011, this is highest
recorded total in TSU history.
According to Taiwan
Johnson, TSU’s Veterans
Affairs coordinator, part of
the success is due to the
renovations and the new
Veterans Resource Center
located in the Bell Building on
campus. The center allows
veterans to meet one another,
utilize the computer lab,
obtain resource information,
learn about events concerning
veterans, get scholarship and
career information as well as
counseling and many other
veteran specific success tools.
Other incentives driving
veterans to enroll at TSU
include: the VA transfer
scholarship, the policy of
using a veteran’s transfer
liaison to review credits
for veterans, adhering to
Military Friendly School
requirements, and a
commitment to 8 Keys
to Veterans’ Success, a
voluntary initiative through
the Departments of Education,
Veterans Affairs, and Defense.
The TSU faculty/staff Veterans
Task Force has also gathered
growing interest over the past
two years.
