On the subject of development, he was more philosophical. “Predictably, there are
more buildings here now but I don’t feel that the village has been spoilt. I don’t
remember so many buildings walking from Stoupa over to Kalogria and sadly
there now seems to be a large building site where the Fanari taverna used to be. I
remember we walked through an olive grove to get there and they served the most
delicious seafood, added to which you had the most fantastic view over the bay. But
generally, I was pleasantly surprised at how Stoupa had retained its character and
how little things had really changed - oh, apart from the Hotel Lefktron, where
we stayed last time and which now has a swimming pool!”
Judith recollected the transfer from Kalamata to Stoupa on their first visit. “The taxi
driver was a madman and the road was not that good. It was very narrow with sharp
bends, which, when taken at speed, were definitely hair-raising, especially as you
had no idea what was coming against you and whether there was room for both
cars to pass each other! This time, we hired a car and the journey was a much more
relaxing experience on much improved roads. And as we had our own car we were
able to explore the area which was a definite plus.”
They clearly enjoyed their stay at the Tria apartments and hope to return again,
certainly before another 24 years pass by……

If you met someone who was visiting the area for the first time, what ONE thing
would you recommend (no matter how small in detail) to them about the following
tavernas and bars? Here are our recommendations, obviously from a meat-eater
who like things a bit spicy! What would yours be?
