Rock Lizard
As I sat under a shady tree lunching I was joined by a large lizard. Completely
oblivious to my presence, it sunbathed 6 feet away. I decided that this really was The
Land That Time Forgot.
I continued onwards but common sense got the better of me and I decided that as I
had already been walking for hours I ought to turn round. Reluctantly I did.
I always find that return journeys are more boring and tend to take less time. So I
usually try to do circular walks. But it is amazing how sometimes things can look very
different on the way back.
I found myself at a spot I didn’t recognise, a series of dry falls. I was looking down
onto a ledge which in turn was looking down into a large clear pool some 12ft below.
Peering down over this ledge was a black snake, obviously in hunting mode.
I watched, fascinated, and after a while it slowly slithered along towards the righthand side of the ledge. It seemed rather large and when the tail finally caught up
with the head it suddenly launched itself into the pool below. A wriggling, writhing,
whirling giant knot landed in the water with a mighty splash. When the waters finally
cleared, there was the snake slowly, serenely, sedately swimming around. No sign of
