were back
in town...

After much speculation and rumourmongering, the waiting was finally
over and the 49th staging of The
Nationals weekend at Hednesford
Hills Raceway was finally here.
The much anticipated Classic Hot
Rod 'Stars of the Past' race was on
every ones lips with the burning
question: "Would the 'old boys' live
up to expectations?
The full entry of participating cars
and drivers were released the
previous week and included Bill
Smith, Barry Lee, George Polley,
Pete Winstone, Steve Dance, Martin

Morris and a certain Deane Wood!
Looking around the pit area it
wasn't difficult to appreciate the
huge amount of effort the
participants had put into the race.
to stay in the fairly safe confines of
the pace car!
A late addition to the starters was
Chris Kew who drove the No 8
Escort Mk ll of Daz Owen.
For example, Lee Wood had two
vehicles and had presented the
Total RS2000 Escort complete with
Barry Lee signage. Dave Fry and
Daz Owen provided the same for
Pete Winstone and Paul Grimer and
George Polley drove a full 306
liveried Anglia belonging to Dean
Hunt. Martin Morris, the original 00,
was present at the race but elected
As the drivers commenced their
presentation lap, true to form and
ever the showman, Barry Lee
decided to be taken anti-clockwise
round the track passing the others
at the mid-lap point and much to the
crowd’s entertainment.
Before you knew it, the race was on.
