Unit Spotlights Military Connection Center An astounding 25 percent of ODU’s campus is military affiliated, and the Military Connection Center (MCC) is home to a one-stop shop for military-affiliated students, including peer to peer connections, admission and financial aid resources, counseling and advising services. The center also has a representative from Veterans Affairs who works with our Sstudent veterans as part of the Vet Success Program. Bill Brown serves as the new director of the Center, and we anticipate hundreds of militaryaffiliated students benefitting from the MCC. The new center offers students an opportunity to meet with veterans and other military family members who offer academic success and career planning workshops to ensure military-affiliated students continue to thrive during their time at ODU. Future plans for the Center include offering services such as guidance for post deployment service members, programs regarding cultural competence, and a mentorship program linking student veterans to ODU faculty and staff who are veterans themselves. Student Recreation Center Recreation & Wellness serves as an ambassador of wellness for students, faculty, staff and the community through wellness programming and membership opportunities. One of their new initiatives is the #MovingMonarchs campaign, a social media and interactive effort designed to get the ODU community moving. New to their technology offerings, is the Rec & Well Trek fitness tracking software. This software along with the onsite fitness assessment provides members with an adaptive collaborative solution to help support their wellness journey. Race the Sun, is a new team adventure race that will take place on March 27. Teams will compete in various physical and thought provoking challenges that must be completed prior to sunset. Team registration will be open through March 22. In addition, the Low Challenge Course facility project was approved and will be opening in the summer. In addition, more than 160 student employees will receive Emergency Action Plan training through a partnership with the ODU Police Department. With many exciting new programs, events and expansions, Recreation & Wellness hopes to strengthen the execution of their mission, Live Well, Learn Well. 2014 Fall Student Impact Testimonials The SRC has impacted me in a positive way.
