Electric Shuttle Launch Enhances Sustainable Access to Upper Rock Nature Reserve
A new electric shuttle service set to operate within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve marks a positive step towards more sustainable and accessible tourism in Gibraltar.
Announced by the Government, the initiative introduces two electric buses that will transport visitors between Market Place and Queens Balcony, providing an alternative solution during the temporary closure of the cable car. The service, delivered through a partnership between the Gibraltar Bus Company and the Gibraltar Taxi Association, will offer improved accessibility, with each vehicle accommodating up to 20 passengers and equipped with wheelchair ramps.
Passengers using the shuttle will be able to access the Nature Reserve and explore its key sites on foot, helping to balance visitor mobility with environmental preservation.
From a sustainability perspective, the introduction of electric transport within one of Gibraltar’ s most important natural assets represents a meaningful shift. Reducing emissions, easing congestion, and improving access for a wider range of visitors aligns with broader efforts to protect and enhance the Reserve’ s unique ecosystem. OTWO welcomes this development as a clear example of how practical, forward-thinking solutions can support both tourism and environmental stewardship. Initiatives like this not only improve the visitor experience but also reinforce the importance of safeguarding Gibraltar’ s natural heritage for future generations.
As Gibraltar continues to evolve its approach to sustainable infrastructure, projects such as the electric shuttle highlight the value of collaboration and innovation in protecting the environment while supporting economic activity.
