New Pedestrian Safety Measures Enhance Accessibility Across Gibraltar
New pedestrian safety measures introduced across Gibraltar signal a continued commitment to creating a more accessible and people-focused urban environment.
Among the latest improvements is the installation of a light-controlled pedestrian crossing on Line Wall Road, near the Youth Centre, an area that has experienced increased foot traffic due to nearby facilities, including a nursery and the GEMA Art Gallery. The addition of this controlled crossing responds to growing demand for safer crossing points along one of Gibraltar’ s busiest routes.
Enhancements to the surrounding streetscape also include the introduction of planters, which serve a dual purpose: improving the visual appeal of the area while naturally encouraging vehicles to slow down as they approach pedestrian zones.

Further safety measures have been implemented across the wider road network. At Keightley Way Tunnel, new demarcation bollards have been installed to improve visibility for drivers, while updated“ School Zone” road markings are being rolled out outside both public and private schools to heighten driver awareness and promote reduced speeds in areas with high pedestrian activity.
These initiatives form part of a broader strategy to prioritise safer, more sustainable modes of transport, particularly walking. By investing in pedestrian infrastructure and awareness, Gibraltar continues to move towards a more liveable, health-conscious environment that supports both residents and visitors.
