Urban Oasis Award Launches to Green Gibraltar Through Community and Cross-Sector Collaboration

OTWO highlights a new initiative launched by the Gibraltar Horticultural Society( GHS) in partnership with the Gibraltar Sustainable Building Group( GSBG): the Urban Oasis Award, a community competition designed to encourage residents and organisations to rethink balconies, windows, courtyards, façades, offices, and shopfronts as potential green spaces. Championing the ethos“ every door a garden, every street an oasis,” the initiative aims to spark a collective transformation of Gibraltar’ s urban environment. Small interventions such as a single planter or green façade are positioned as catalysts for improved air quality, biodiversity, and wellbeing, ultimately contributing to healthier neighbourhoods and a more resilient city. Speaking at the launch, Minister for the Environment, Dr. John Cortes, praised the initiative, noting that it aligns with ongoing work to beautify Gibraltar and introduce more greenery into urban areas, with associated social and environmental benefits. From the construction sector, Bruno Campos, Managing Director at Casais Gibraltar, highlighted the importance of integrating sustainability into the built environment, stating that meaningful change also comes from initiatives that bring people closer to nature in everyday spaces. Gibraltar Horticularual Society’ s Annabelle Mor-Codali underscored the inclusive nature of the competition, noting how a single balcony, business frontage, or coordinated effort across a street can help reshape the city’ s image and cultivate civic pride.
