Prime Minister calls on Guyanese to have a sense of creativity – at opening of sculpture exhibition
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport opened an exhibition in observance of Guyana’s 44th Republic Anniversary at the National Gallery of Art where 44 sculptures from the national collection are on display.
Some of the pieces on show were done by E.R. Burrows, Winslow Craig, Oswald Hussain, Omawale Lumumba, Phillip Moore, Campton Harris and Gary Thomas.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds recognized that art, music and literature are representations of the creator’s feelings and views.
While recognizing the need for more school aged children to attend the exhibition, the Prime Minister stated that “we should have a sense of creativity in all that we do.”
When speaking about the city, he noted that Georgetown today is the citizen’s creation in every aspect. The Prime Minister emphasized that this view should be considered as the nation celebrates its 44th anniversary.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony noted that Guyana has a lot of talent and creativity and over the years artists have been making wonderful pieces however much of it has been displayed worldwide.
He pointed out that in the past the Ministry has been criticized for paying more attention on the parade aspect of the Republic celebrations instead of the intellectual aspects.
The Minister noted that a lot has been done to improve the gallery, and one of those is undertaking an aggressive acquisition policy. With regards to the collection itself, work is being done on restoration and proper storage.
Additionally, later in the year the second visual arts competition and exhibition will be held. Minister Anthony highlighted that many art enthusiasts will be aware of the fact that after about 2 decades the Ministry was able to bring back a high quality competition.
The Minister is urging artists to start preparing for the competition. He called that in the last competition there was an overwhelming response in submissions. Further, due to that, all of the pieces could not have been displayed at one location – the National Museum accommodated those the National Gallery could not.
“That’s the diversity of talent that we have in Guyana…we have been seeing a resurgence in art more so now that we have opportunities for more exhibitions
Minister Anthony encouraged the gathering to attend the flag raising ceremony and parade on Sunday. “Times like these allows us to reflect on what it is to be a republic, its benefit to us and what we can do as citizens of Guyana in building a better nation,” he said.
