Students and staff at the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) in Onderneeming, Region 2 planned and executed several activities with the aim of celebrating Guyana’s 44th Republic Anniversary. The two weeks of activities were held under the theme “Cultural Folklore: Celebrating 44” and the administrators of the NOC came up with another theme – “Celebrating our Culture, Our People, Our Pride.”

The highlight of the celebrations was the students’ participation in the Region 2 Mashramani parade where the NOC contingent got first. In 2013 and 2012, the institution copped 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Some of the other activities pulled off by the NOC were a series of inter-house sports events including a road race, cricket, boxing, circle tennis, domino and net ball. The students also competed in a football match against the Supenaam team.

The NOC’s steel band also took to the streets where they entertained the residents with their musical skills.

Additionally, revelers from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports also participated in Mash parades in Regions 6 and 10 where hundreds of Guyanese turned out to view the floats, mingle and interact with relatives and friends.
