Commuting by bicycle is the best way to get around on Mackinac Island because there are NO CARS ! Since the early 1900s , Mackinac ’ s local laws have prohibited motorized vehicles on the Island , creating a perfect opportunity for bicycles to thrive . Locals , workers and visitors alike all ride bikes for transportation , touring the sites and for some good old exercise .

If you ’ re planning to visit the Island , you can bring your own bikes from home or rent them on the Island . There are numerous bike rentals offering all types and levels of bicycles for your biking adventure .
For your first ride , pack a box lunch and pedal along the gorgeous eight mile perimeter shoreline route called M-185 . It ’ s the easiest , most popular ride and a good way to acquaint yourself with the Island and its beauty . The ride around the Island is mostly flat , very scenic , and takes about an hour without stopping . But what ’ s the rush ? You ’ ll want to go slow , take photos , stop for lunch , jump in the lake and enjoy the beauty , so allow at least two hours or more .
For more challenging bike riding , there are numerous routes throughout the Island ’ s hilly wooded interior offering a variety of rolling paved roads , hard packed bike paths , beautiful forest trails and single tracks . Try riding Leslie Avenue ’ s gentle rolling paved bike trail and experience the lush cedar forests of Mackinac . For more advanced cyclists , there are steep rocky routes for expert riders on mountain bikes only . Tranquil Bluff Trail is an extremely challenging ride .
