Laurel Students Collaborate on Mural Projects with Whittier Artist
Laurel Mural Club, an artistic partnership between Laurel Elementary students and Whittier artist Dennis McGonagle, continues to thrive with the support of the Laurel PTA and school administration. The project began last year with 280 students submitting mural ideas, leading McGonagle to design the "Mystic Jungle" mural, which 120 students and a teacher helped paint over 14 after-school sessions. At the mural’s dedication last February, L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office pledged funding for more murals.
This fall, thanks to a generous grant from Hahn and additional fundraising by the PTA, Laurel Mural Club expanded. Now 140 students and several teachers are working with McGonagle on two new murals. The murals will serve as permanent public art pieces, enhancing the community while providing students with the opportunity to contribute to Whittier’s landscape.
