TRADITIONAL GROUPINGS
STRIKE A POSE
At Alders Photography, I pride myself on
capturing the most natural, spontaneous
moments possible. This style showcases your
day as it was, documenting it as it unfolds; not
by me orchestrating it.
While I shoot the majority of my images this way,
it’s also very important to capture formal portraits
as well. These family formals are best taken right
after the ceremony. In my experience, no matter
how early you tell family to get there ahead of
time, frequently one person is absent & the time
is wasted.
For couple & wedding party photos, a “First
Look” is when you see each other before the
ceremony & it allows us to do those photos
before the ceremony, but it’s still always best to
do family formals after.
I encourage my couples to find out when sunset
is on their wedding day & to take portraits during
the 2-3 hours before sunset--known as Golden
Hour. I only recommend a “first look” during
the winter months when it will be necessary to
use daylight. Waiting to see each other at the
ceremony & doing portraits after during the
summer utilizes the evening light.
I am happy to shoot as many as six family
formals: bride’s immediate family, bride’s mom’s
side, bride’s dad’s side, groom’s immediate
family, groom’s dad’s side, & groom’s mom’s
side. I always start with the largest group &
break it down from there so family members can
be dismissed to the cocktail hour.
In addition to different poses with the whole
wedding party together, I also love to include
a picture of the bride with each bridesmaid &
the groom with each groomsmen, since each
person is in the wedding party due to close,
personal ties with the couple.
