This past November marked the Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast Associations annual conference (www.wbba.org).
At the farewell dinner, the association has a tradition of cleverly auctioning off desserts to all the attendees with the proceeds going toUniversity of Wisconsin - Stout for their hospitality student scholarships.. WBBA members made/provided exquisite desserts, there were LOTS to choose from. The auction was conducted by Jerry and Mark Philips, a father and son duo who are owners of the Old Ritten House Inn in Bayfield Wisconsin.
The fun evening included a lot of antics and stories mixed with a lot of humor! Each table had to come up with as much money as they could and throw it in the middle and those tables with the highest amount of money got to pick from the dessert table first. Our table was third or fourth and throughout the entire evening Jerry Philips was saying he had made an exquisite Black Walnut Bourbon Pie. I had never heard of any such pie, it sounded delicious and I picked that pie for my table to enjoy. Let me tell you I grew up on pie being raised on a farm, I don’t think my family knew of any other kinds of dessert with four boys in the house! That pie was so good it gave me a new love for pie! I asked Jerry and Mark for the recipe and they have graciously shared it with us this issue! The Old Ritten House has celebrated over 40 years of Innkeeping! The inn offers beautiful accommodations in three separate buildings offering 20 rooms and suites. There is a full service restaurant on site and to top if off they also find time to do exquisite weddings! Overlooking Lake Superior.
Don't forget to make the pie! It’s so delicious! I recommend serve it with LOTS of whipped cream!
