Third, I find that having a “Results Book” is a great encouragement. I created this to serve as a congratulatory journal, as opposed to the “To Do” list that never seems to get done. The only entries in this journal are ones of achievement and goal attainment. For example, you may list, “I finally called a friend I had been avoiding,” or “Today, I didn’t have any sugar,” or “I got up early and did the workout I had been promising myself.” With the Results Book, every type of result gets documented daily; emotional goals, physical goals, tasks, etc.
Fourth, celebrate! We can really be not only our own worst critics and disciplinarians, but we can truly forget to give ourselves some pampering and a great life that we so often encourage and give to others. Isn’t it time to make that list of all the things you love and give yourself a treat from this list? It could be as simple as carving out thirty minutes to read a favorite book, or take an epsom salt bath, or go for a massage, or willingly ask for help. For the caregiver personality, often it is difficult to ask others for help, but this is a vital part of creating balance in your own life.
Finally, one of the best ways to balance your life and to de-stress your days is to be a better communicator – not only with others but with yourself. Set your limits, your expectations and be honest with yourself and others. The transparency of communication can really take a huge weight off your shoulders. This makes life not only manageable, but makes room for you to be of the greatest service you can be to yourself and others.
