nnkeeper Marilouise Micuda was originally an investor in The Bed and Breakfast Inn at Jolla (pronounced La Hoy-a) project in 1984. The 15-

room inn is located in San Diego's premiere beach

community, just north of San Diego, California. Its picture perfect setting, a block from the Pacific ocean and ambiance makes it one of the most romantic B&Bs in Southern California. For several years they had hired a full time innkeeper, but it just never seemed to gain the financial stability they thought it would. In the late 80's and early 90's the economy took a downturn. The bank was on the verge of foreclosing when Marilouise had an idea. She approached the other stockholders and said, “I’ve never run a B&B before but I am passionate about this project.” The other investors felt that they had nothing to lose and agreed to risk it. She took it over even though it was overwhelming and she was putting in 14-hour days, seven days a week with no end in sight. Marilouise admits, “I didn’t even know how to make a decent cup of coffee.” Her husband and two young daughters all rolled up their sleeves and pitched in. She began renovating and putting together a progressive marketing plan, but just as she was settling into her new role, disaster struck. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and given one year to live. With luck and deep faith she survived and at times she says, “It felt as though I was being guided by a higher power.” Marilouise credits the inn for having given her a reason to have to get out of bed every morning. 20 years later she is still the innkeeper, “It has been one of the greatest challenges of my life and I have learned more than I could ever have learned at any school.”

Today the inn has garnered the number one position on TripAdvisor and a reputation as a ‘foodie or culinary geek destination.’ Guests are treated each morning to a gourmet 4-course breakfast that starts with mimosas. This is the new trend and everyday they offer a remarkable fine dining breakfast experience. Most popular room in the house is the Gill Suite with roof top patio perfect to sit out on for relaxing with a glass of wine!

Three things haven’t changed for sure: the view, discerning decor, and the incredible hospitality you receive when you walk through the door. It’s simply outstanding!
