RECENTLY, MTA EXPANDED ITS“ RIDE TO GROCERIES” SERVICE TO INCLUDE THE ENTIRETY OF GENESEE COUNTY.
Nine additional specially-equipped propane vehicles with specialty wraps were purchased by Health Alliance Plan( HAP) of Michigan as the company’ s way of showing support for the“ Ride to Groceries” services. The vehicles will be assigned to Your Ride service centers to transport passengers in various locations across Genesee County.
The vehicles each hold 10-12 passengers and have conveniently placed racks for grocery purchases. There is no limit to the amount of groceries a passenger can bring onto the vehicle.
“ Many people feel isolated and we believe this expanded service will have a powerful impact on the community,” Benning said.
“ Opening up the“ Rides to Groceries” to Genesee County will assist passengers in being able to get out and have more independence.”
“ This community is facing a number of challenges and, for that reason, we think that these new services are especially important during this time— not only for today but for our future. People are living much longer, so they need these services,” said Benning.
This is a different approach to the operation, said Benning, because the vehicles will come to the passengers’ homes. To schedule a pick-up, contact your local Your Ride office. Schedules may be set up for daily, weekly or even bi-monthly transportation for the service, which is open to everyone. The service will run seven days per week for a
cost of $ 3.50 each way. Seniors and persons with disabilities can ride for the discounted rate of $ 2.25 each way.
Benning believes the expansion of“ Ride to Groceries” will bring positive change to the community as a whole.“ Offering this type of service to our passengers is MTA’ s future,” he said.
“ Statistics show that over 4,000 people in the city of Flint are isolated in their homes. These people need access to groceries and healthcare and MTA is working to address
this issue,” said Benning.
