They manage their soils through composting and various cover crops that increase fertility and soil biology and utilize cultural practices such as proper spacing, rotations, and using“ row covers” to mitigate pest and disease problems. Earthworks is a fully owned program of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen; it was established in 1998, and the majority of the produce is used for meals in the kitchen.
Although its primary activity is to run the farm, Earthworks is also active within the community; it hosts classes for Detroit gardeners, provides a youth after-school program, and has a nine-month intensive grower-training program for adults.

The Capuchins’ history in Detroit further illustrates their serious attention to their stated mission: Inspired by St. Francis, we tend to peoples’ basic needs, especially the need for food, strive to stimulate minds and nourish spirits, and work to understand root causes of social injustice in our community. In all we do, we seek to build alliances with others who share a commitment to this vision.
Along with the broad range of support services offered by the soup kitchen, spiritual care and support is always at hand for anyone who seeks it. It is a further testimony to the quality and integrity of the programs that this guidance is always available but never forced. It is the spiritual dimension that sets the Capuchin Soup Kitchen apart from so many other social agencies.
One can sense a special spirit immediately upon passing through its doors. The caring and gentle nature of all who serve are a reflection of the passion for service to people that was the heart of St. Francis.
