The Francis Crick Institute is one of the first buildings of any type to be subject to the 2010 energy regulations which demanded an average 25 % reduction in carbon levels from the 2006 levels . It is also intended to train and inspire the next generation of scientists and will host some 1,500 research staff making this one of Europe ’ s largest centres of biomedical research .

This was utilised at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine where containment laboratories and specialist insectaries facilitate the research work carried out by the school .

Arup have also designed and delivered some of the most technically demanding projects within the Science domain . During LinAc , National Physical Laboratory , Arup combined the complex structural design of a concrete bunker to house a Linear Accelerator with precise temperature and humidity control (± 0.1 ° C ). The intention was to maintain ideal conditions for repeatability of experiments for calibration .
On DUSEL ( Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory ) / Sanford Underground Research Facility Arup combined proficiency in laboratory design with expertise in geotechnics and tunnel engineering to provide an advanced research facility 7,400 feet underground .
With ever expanding new technologies , tools and research processes , laboratories have to constantly adapt . Arup recognise this challenge and provide an innovation solution in modular design .
Our adaptable laboratories incorporate moveable furniture , benching and partitions to create multiple layout options . During construction of The Sainsbury Wellcome Trust the end user of the building was yet to be confirmed so planning an adaptable laboratory space called for a truly innovative design .
The multi-disciplinary team provided a full range of technical advice and solutions for a flexible , cost effective and energy efficient laboratory .
