Welcome to our sixth edition of Innovate
Innovate ’ s opening section this year focuses on digital learning , a reflection on the notable impact developments in Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) have had on education in the past year . AI is explored through a variety of lenses : Dr Paul Parham discusses the reasons AI should be embraced in schools , its potential to impact on educational experiences for teachers and students , and future implications for the teaching of mathematics . Laurence Goodwin reflects on her own learning journey with AI , whilst Charley Openshaw and Ian Campbell consider AI ’ s impact and future potential . We are delighted to include an article on ‘ PedTech ’ from Benjamin Sharratt , Vice Principal of GEMS Wellington International School in Dubai , in which he explores how technology can be used to benefit teachers and students . From a student perspective , we have the pleasure of including an article from Sixth Former Boris Lo , in which he reflects on his experiences as a Youth Advisor in the Internet Governance Forum ’ s AI policy network .
In our ‘ Learning to Learn ’ section , Elen Harris explores the benefits of and barriers to outdoor education , which connects with work on ‘ engagement with nature ’ that we have undertaken in association with RSI and the Harvard program for Human Flourishing . Our Director Mark Beverley makes suggestions for increasing opportunities for finding Meaning and Purpose in the taught curriculum , Meaning and Purpose being another of the five domains of flourishing identified by the Havard Human Flourishing Research , whilst Dr Paul Parham explores research on mindset and habits of high performers .
Continuing the theme of student flourishing , in our Wellbeing section , Cath Nicholson reflects on her experience in building successful hockey teams ; Anna- Vibeke Eilert shares her knowledge and observations on using laughter yoga and palming in the classroom , and Director of HE and Careers Wendy Heydorn focuses on approaches to take when students are ready to leave school and enter university or the workplace .
Our Character Education section features an article called Learning to Look : Attention , Relationality and Spirituality in Modern Education , in which Dr James Beck examines the need for receptive attention in our modern technology-focused world . Guiliana Savini reflects on her experience as a US university application tutor to explore how the application process and the IB can help develop students ’ capacity to be caring community members .
Our final article is in the Services and Partnerships section , in which Isla Philips-Ewen , Director of Kent Academies Network , reviews her experience of using the Likert scale to assess confidence , knowledge and agency in the KAN programme .
We thank our authors for their insightful articles and for their commitment to professional enquiry and development .
