The island nation in South Asia that was plagued by civil unrest until 2009 has excelled to become a key
tourism hotspot, attracting a rising number of visitors and investors. An untapped gaming market in
India is stirring consideration to occupy Sri Lanka as a gateway into the region.
Located within a four-hour plane ride from the major cities
in India, investors see Sri Lanka as a prosperous bet into the
market. Major casino operators Las Vegas Sands, Caesars
Entertainment and MGM Resorts have each expressed
serious interest in India over the past few years, with the
view of a potentially huge target audience.
Tourist arrivals to the picturesque island have risen every
month for the past three years and according to government
data, is next only to Maldives in the South Asian region
in terms of per capita income. Tourism is one of the main
foreign exchange earners for Sri Lanka’s US$ 59bn economy
and has seen new developments and businesses spring up.
“Sri Lanka has huge potential to be a perfect gaming destination,” suggested Hardik Dhebar, CFO of
Delta Corp., an Indian casino operator. “There has been 27 percent growth in the tourism industry yearon-year, and Indians, Chinese and Koreans are flocking in. It’s an extremely investor friendly country.”
