Entrepreneurship is the art of moving away from the herd. People believe it’s essential to have experience before venturing into this new world of uncertainty. Henry Ford was born with an inventor’s attitude, Mark Zuckerberg needed no experience, Bill gates started his venture at seventeen, and Richard Branson started experimented when he was less than 10 years old. So does one actually need experience? Another way of putting it is saying luck makes the difference. Then how do you explain Warren Buffet proclaiming that he’d be a billionaire sometime in the future, right when he was in his twenties? How do you explain Dhirubhai Ambani’s unshaken certainty in the future of Reliance? But what worked for them might not work for you. So, how do you gauge when you’re ready to leave a group of believers, say your organization? Well, the answer is simple. When you closely examine successful entrepreneurs you realize what matters the most is your ability to change with the times and learn from not just yours but others’ mistakes as well and hence transform. When you’re amongst your peer group try and be different amongst the group, not different from the group. Start at dawn by treading along the borders of the herd and return to the core by dusk. Start your experiments within the herd and make change happen. Inspire innovation within the herd, change the situation, change people, and most importantly, change yourself. One misconception is that change is essentially slow. Change can be quick, but it also can be subtle which is why at times it is difficult to notice it unless it is gradual.
