Pieces of Plastic and Glass

Emily Alexander

I’ve found myself

in pieces of plastic

and glass

A lens to see

The world through

Able to manipulate

Able to communicate

The life I experience

The life I create

Around me

Through pieces of

Plastic and glass

You can see it

Emily Alexander

Why do you tell me

You can see it?

I can see perfectly fine

For myself, I didn’t ask for

Your perspective

I don’t need to know

That others can see it too

I would like to stay

In denial of my surroundings

I would like to stay

Confident

Don’t tell me you can see it.

Hitting Refresh

Emily Alexander

I have no excuses

I have all the time in the world

And I spend it

Hitting the refresh button

Waiting for something to happen

Without me having to lift anything but

My index finger

I’m waiting for something to fall

Into my lap

I just keep

Hitting refresh

With In

Emily Alexander

I’m written down with ink

On flame retardant paper

Hand over hand

I feel my mouth opening like

The earth when

Hades takes over

My mind melts

I feel it dripping down

My skin

Like ice cream

On a hot day

The asphalt a

River beneath me
