In 1960 , Johor Bahru , the capital city of the state of Johor was a burgeoning urban center with a unique blend of colonial and traditional Malay influences .
The area around the Causeway and the Custom Complex as shown in the photo background was already bustling and dynamic , reflecting both the city ’ s historical significance and daily activities of the time .
Johor ’ s proximity to Singapore made Johor Bahru an important trading hub , with goods and people frequently moving between the two cities .
Across the Straits of Johor , the Woodlands area in Singapore was still a wooded area with a Malaysian Naval Base stationed there .
