SELF-REGULATION APPROACH AND SUSTAINABILITY IN PALM OIL PRODUCTION
The oil palm plantation industry is now a significant source of income for the counry . However , its impact on the environment has become a major issue which requires serious attention to ensure that the business can grow in a sustainable manner to add to the wealth of the nation . The effort should not only come from the Government , but it also needs the co-operation of palm oil industry players and Non-Government Organisations ( NGOs ) for it to be successful .
Environmental Mainstreaming Tools The DOE has initiated a programme titled “ Guided Self-Regulation ( GSR )” to assist the community in complying with the environmental regulations and encouraging industry players to do their part in protecting the environment . To achieve this , Environmental Mainstreaming Tools ( EMT ) have been established as guidelines . The details of the EMT are shown in Figure 11 and includes the contribution and commitment of management of organisations , budget availability , monitoring operations by competent persons , facilities to monitor and manage all environmental
aspects , and transparency in reporting and communication .
Sustainability Certification The Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council ( MPOCC ), an independent non-profit organisation , is responsible for developing and operating the Malaysia Sustainable Palm Oil ( MSPO ) certification scheme which is mandatory for all palm oil growers , traders , millers who are licensed by the MPOB . The certification commenced on January 1 , 2020 . This certification will help the industry to be a credible business with a sustainable approach to the protection of the environment . Figure 12 shows the principles of the MSPO certification .
Another certification authority is the Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil ( RSPO ) which is also a non-profit organisation that unites stakeholders from the seven sectors of the palm oil industry , namely palm oil producers , processors or traders , consumer goods manufacturers , retailers , banks / investors , and environmental and social NGOs . RSPO is developing and implementing global standards for sustainable palm oil . The certification scheme is also based on the principles of prosperity for businesses and protecting the environment and people ’ s welfare . The RSPO certification has been recognised
