Construction of Bailey Bridge over the collapsed Temerloh Bridge , 1971

By Cheo Hong Keyong
In January 1971 , a severe 100-year annual return interval ( ARI ) flood inundated many parts of the country . The flood swept away the center spans of the Temerloh Bridge across the Pahang River . The high flood water carrying logs from upstream exerted pressure on the bridge deck until it yielded .
A temporary Bailey Bridge was built on January 20 , 1971 over the collapsed Temerloh Bridge to keep Federal Route 2 open to traffic . Later , the Public Works Department ( JKR ) constructed a 575m replacement bridge , known as the Sultan Ahmad Shah Bridge FT2 , beside the old Temerloh Bridge .
