by one or two fishermen using a boat with a 25 horsepower motor . The time taken to collect adult cockles and cockle spat is about 2-3 minutes for each effort . To date , besides the sustainability management of the source of cockles in the country , the occupational safety and health aspects of the fishermen have to be taken into account to avoid occupational diseases . Tasks characterised by higher ergonomic back stress such as loading / unloading and sorting catches and lower ergonomic back stress such as running pullers or net reels have been associated with the occurrence of severe Low Back Pain ( LBP ) ( Kucera et al . 2009 ). In this study , a mechanical apparatus for adult cockle harvesting was developed . Then the ergonomic risk factor of the mechanical apparatus compared with the traditional hand scoop method ( tangguk kerang ) was carried out to ensure that the equipment used matched the user ' s ability .
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Methods used for this study were divided to two categories – the development of a mechanical apparatus and an ergonomic study . The best mechanical apparatus design was chosen and fabricated then tested in the ergonomic study .
