Productive Construction Leads Productive Waste Management By Intan Diyana Musa Mohammad Faedzwan Abdul Rahman Maria Zura Mohd Zain Zuhairi Abdul Hamid Construction Research Institute of Malaysia COVER FEATURE The construction industry is one of the biggest industrial sectors in Malaysia and it plays a vital role in contributing to the economic growth of the country. It is the most productive sector and is a catalyst of growth for other industries. Even though globally we are facing economic turmoil and Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) only grew 3.6% in the fourth quarter of 2019, the construction sector achieved a 4.5 % share of the nation’s GDP (see Figure 1). Although the construction industry is a risky, challenging and complex business, the industry continues striving to achieve a high level of productivity. This is not measured just in terms of the rate of output per unit of input but the contribution of the whole process of a development project including planning, construction and facilities management. Waste generation and the management of waste is the one of the main elements in measuring Figure 1. GDP Breakdown by Sector (Source: Department of Statistic Malaysia, 2020) 11
