Sanitation improvements have evolved since the birth of man, yet until the 21 st century, many parts of the world still lack a proper sewerage system. About two billion people on Planet Earth still lack good sanitation facilities. Hence, targets have been set under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 6 to accelerate sanitation improvements globally by the year 2030. Proper and efficient sewerage systems protect public health, provide comfort and conducive surroundings to communities and safeguard rivers from untoward pollution which is detrimental to potable water. 31
