International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO)
192 Nation Members
including Malaysia and UK
Formed in 1944, Chicago
Convention.
Figure 1: ICAO annexes
the overhaul, repair, inspection, replacement,
modification or defect rectification of aircraft
structures, components and systems in
accordance with the methods prescribed in the
relevant Maintenance Manuals and the applicable
standards of airworthiness.
ICAO Annex 1 also stipulates that a LAME
must be able to apply the laws of natural
science, mathematics, principles and theory
of physics and chemistry as applicable to
aircraft engineering and maintenance. Recently,
universities and colleges have developed
education and training programmes known
as aircraft engineering, aircraft maintenance,
aircraft maintenance engineering and aircraft
systems engineering, covering similar subjects,
for the LAME professional training programme
approved by CAAM. However, airworthiness
certifications can only be exercised by an
individual who holds a CAAM AML and not just
degree holders. To rephrase the role of a LAME,
it would to certify that an aircraft and its systems’
functionality are within its engineering design
and operational specifications. It is a very unique
field in Malaysia and there are only approximately
2,000 CAAM active LAMEs compared with non-
AME engineers who total up to approximately
130,000 currently.
CAAM Airworthiness Notices (AN) No.
1101 and No.6501 Categories of AML
CAAM Aircraft Maintenance Licences (AMLs) are
granted in accordance with the current standards
of the ICAO contained in Annex 1 to the Chicago
Convention. In the AN1101 and AN6501 the
following AML categories are described;
