Batu Pahat Bridge Under
Construction

The Government, during the proposal stage of
the Second Malaya Plan, had originally planned
to build a bridge in Batu Pahat along Route 5,
Jalan Bakau Condong over Sungei Batu Pahat.
However, owing to pressure from Muar residents
for a bridge to replace a ferry service, the
Government included the proposal to build the
Muar Bridge in addition to the Batu Pahat Bridge
under the Second Malaya Plan (1961-1965).

The then Minister of Works, Posts and
Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s , Tu n S a m b a n t h a n
announced the Government’s decision to
build both bridges to the public. A tender
for the construction of the Muar and Batu
Pahat bridges was called in 1960 and the
Government awarded the contract to two
contractors - Wing Co Ltd and Development
Services.
