capitalise on the domestic and international markets. There is already at least one factory in Malaysia that mass-produces lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles besides for IT devices — Samsung SDI Energy Malaysia. This means that there are basic resources available that can be retrained or restructured, such as manufacturing facilities, technologies and experienced manpower, to produce rechargeable car batteries, an important component of electric cars. In addition, there are a few public universities that are involved in research related to lithium and graphite substances. These ready advantages plus a growing market may provide conducive conditions for the development of electric cars. All that is needed is for the Government to make the decision to set in place policy to support electric car manufacturing and seek out potential experienced partners to kick-start the industry.
