The role of the Institute of Plantation Studies in Modernising Agriculture
Smart agriculture is one of the eight high-impact industries outlined in the Twelfth Malaysia Plan ( RMK12 ). The Institute of Plantation Studies ( IKP ) in UPM actively conducts research and produces innovations related to smart agriculture approaches where farmers use exact amounts of required inputs such as water , fertiliser and pesticides at specific times and locations , allowing farms to become more profitable , efficient , safe and environmentally friendly . Innovations related to the remote crop management concept have also been developed by IKP ( see Figure 5 ). This is done by using various types of technologies such as sensing technology , IoT , positioning technology , machines , robots , drones , communication systems and application software . To provide holistic solutions for the plantation crop industry , IKP fully
