Strong employee involvement in safety leads to employees “ taking ownership ” of safety . This leads directly to a natural response from employees , as employee culture and commitment are at the forefront of ensuring personal safety . Employee involvement is important for the aspect of safety participation , a behaviour that does not only directly contribute to an individual ’ s personal safety but also helps to influence a safetypromoting environment . Employee involvement can bring about changes in employees ’ value systems that are consistent with organisational goals and motivate employees to improve their performance by changing their attitudes , beliefs and values to go beyond workplace safety to reduce accidents , injuries and absenteeism .
Summary
Malaysia is a rapidly developing country with many mega projects in operation that pose workplace hazards that need to be prevented and controlled to ensure that projects are not delayed due to occupational accidents . To reduce the likelihood of workplace accidents that harm the country ’ s productivity , an effective workplace safety management system is a must . To ensure OSHMS at the workplace is in place , two key elements need to be improved : management leadership and employee involvement .
Good management leadership is committed to safety and health in the workplace and will have a clear policy , leadership qualities , visible commitment and core values on safety and health . Thus , a high level of management leadership on OSH will influence employee safety performance which will then increase safety compliance . On the other hand , employee involvement can be increased through encouragement , access to OSH information , consultation , and removal of barriers to employee involvement in safety and health . High employee involvement will contribute to safety participation and ensure safety for everyone in the workplace .
