that , a workplace inspection is conducted based on 30 items at three high-risk activities on a site . The SHASSIC assessor will choose the activities based on a hierarchy of high-risk activities . Before choosing these high-risk activities for assessment , the assessor may additionally consult with the principal contractor . This evaluation will give the assessor useful visual comparison information on the OSH programmes that have been established , enforced , and used at the site / workplace . Finally , personnel interview is carried out by randomly selecting personnel from three levels and occupations , namely ,
1 . Category A : Managerial personnel ( One person ),
2 . Category B : Supervisory personnel ( Three persons ), and
3 . Category C : Working personnel ( Nine persons ).
A total of 34 questions will be used for this component .
SHASSIC is beneficial towards continuous improvement and increases the readiness for OSH in Construction Industry ( Management ) ( OSHCIM ). The applicants will also receive several benefits or incentives including automatic 20 CCD Points for contractor ’ s registration renewal , extra points for OHSAS 18001 / MS1722 / ISO45001 Certification , and competency to participate in MCIEA for Safety Category . The SHASSIC process flow involves five stages : ( 1 ) Application , ( 2 ) Confirmation of Project Status , ( 3 ) Notification of Assessment Date and
Implementation , ( 4 ) Preparation of Report and Score , and ( 5 ) SHASSIC Score ( in Star Rating ). The assessment fee is RM2,350 as of January 1 , 2023 . The application can be done at http :// shassic . cidb . gov . my /.
Through SHASSIC compliance , construction safety and health management can be further
Figure 1 : Total projects that implemented SHASSIC in 2021 and 2022 improved with customised training or corrective actions for the areas where they fall short . SHASSIC was designed to aid everyone operating building sites , particularly contractors . High-quality construction can be achieved , and accidents can be avoided or reduced , by adopting the SHASSIC evaluation system as a standard of practice on site .
In 2022 , 107 projects in Malaysia implemented SHASSIC compared to 62 projects in 2021 . In terms of scores , 56 projects in Malaysia were awarded five stars SHASSIC Score in 2022 while only 30 projects in Malaysia attained five stars SHASSIC Score in 2021 , as shown in Figure 1 . This indicates a positive trend towards improved safety and health performance within the construction industry . The increase in the number of projects implementing SHASSIC suggests a growing awareness of the importance of safety and health standards in construction practices and could imply that companies are taking safety and health regulations more seriously and are implementing better practices to ensure the well-being of workers and the public .
This increase in safety and health awareness and performance is crucial for reducing accidents , injuries , and fatalities within the construction industry . It also reflects positively on the overall development and progress of Malaysia ’ s construction sector . It is important to continue promoting and enforcing safety standards to ensure sustained improvements in the years to come .
