Currently , one of my greatest challenges is to identify the right engineering talent in the industry . I have interviewed hundreds of students , graduates , technicians , engineering technologists and engineers . I can conclude that I am thankful for the BEM requirements for 30 % of full-time lecturers at Institutions of Higher Learning to be certified as professional engineers . This is crucial because of the ability of the professional engineer to instil the right motivation and attitude in the students who are the future engineers of the nation . Actual industry experience and knowledge shared with the students are usually exciting and impactful , with the effect of inspiring the future generation of engineers . I presented a two-hour talk on an aircraft system yesterday and I was requested to do so by the sales team . In their mind , who can explain better an aircraft design , systems and safety factors if not the engineer ? I have called back aircraft or disallowed an aircraft to continue its mission because of safety issues despite the pilot ’ s confidence . Some of you may know , Kelly Johnson , the former chief engineer of Skunk Works chose which pilot to fly the first prototype SR-71 , famously known as the “ Blackbird ” supersonic reconnaissance aircraft . It is the engineer who makes the decision — who knows better about the aircraft if not the engineer ?
We don ’ t guess and make arbitrary decisions . We apply scientific and mathematical principles with decisions made based on the system ’ s behaviour influenced by physics , scientific and mathematical principles .
Conclusion
The engineer possesses knowledge and skills that have an impact on the safety of the public and society . Attention to engineering ethics should never be taken lightly , both by the industry and the institution of higher learning . Decisions with the fundamentals of ethics as the underlying principles for engineers should be promoted not only by the engineering practitioner but also educators involved in engineering education . A professional code of conduct enables engineers to apply ethical principles , especially in critical conditions and situations . Good ethics compliance supports engineering safety and protects the public and engineers .
