conditions [ 26 ]. Therefore , the air quality in Taiwan is incessantly bad .
The Numerical Weather Prediction ( NWP ) model is able to show the climatic and weather conditions of these cities and provide a glimpse of the significant climate parameters that affect the living environment of cities [ 27 ]. The future climate conditions , according to the different Representative Concentration Pathway ( RCP ) suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ), on different levels of greenhouse gas concentration scenarios , can also be predicted with the assistance of NWP models . This can assist urban planners to decide on a more suitable location for a new townships or understand the climatic and air quality conditions for the existing cities , to be better prepared for calamities . Despite the detrimental meso-effects on the urban region , there is no existing rating tool for this .
Way Forward
Urban environment design is a prospering field . Along with the Construction Industry Transformation Plan ( CITP ) 2016-2020 and the coming plans , sustainability aspects are highlighted on sustainability accreditation , CO 2 emissions , resilient construction , and solid waste management [ 28 ]. Malaysia has also envisioned sustainable cities by the year 2030 by launching the Kuala Lumpur Low Carbon Society Blueprint 2030 as well as the Roadmap towards Zero Single-use Plastic in 2030 . More guidelines will be rolled out while more projects are targeted to meet the sustainability ratings . Nevertheless , the criteria for the green rating tools in Malaysia are still comparably simple to meet compared to the UK , US and Singapore standards . It is , therefore , necessary to improve the rating criteria along the way to address the unique and diverse problems faced by each city . The interaction of weather and human activities is mutual . Here , we talked about the implication of urban areas on the environment , but the climate has been long known to determine past human civilisations . The food for thought is whether continuous unplanned urbanisation will intensify weather extremes such as fire , thunderstorms and flooding , and in turn threaten the future livelihood of urban dwellers .
