Stadium Negara under construction in 1961

Construction works for the 10,000-seat Stadium Negara commenced in 1960 and was completed in 1962 at the cost of RM34 million . It was the country ’ s first indoor stadium as well as the best indoor stadium in South East Asia then and was listed as a National Monument under the National Heritage Act , 2005 .
The stadium was officially opened on April 19 , 1962 by the Yang Dipertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Putra and witnessed by the then Prime Minister , Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra .
The project was led by the Public Works Department Director , Stanley Edward Jewkes , and supported by structural engineers , Ng Eng Hean and WJ Cumming .
The general contractors were Mr Koon Yew Yin , Mr MD Canavan and Mr S Nakendra .
