The risk-based approach takes into account previous experiences , predictions , and the probability of failures . The assessment of risks and inspection schedules are where RBI differentiates from more traditional time-based inspection methods .
There are two critical factors of risk analysis for RBI . First is the probability of failure ( POF ) assessment , through which the company evaluates the likelihood of failure due to damage , deterioration , or degradation . The second factor is the consequence of failure ( COF ). That represents how much it would cost if a particular equipment or machinery breaks down .
There are three basic approaches to data collection for RBI :
Qualitative Takes into consideration descriptive data based on the judgment and experience of inspectors
Quantitative Inspectors base their assessment on statistics and probability
Semi-quantitative Organisation uses both approaches ( qualitative and quantitative ) in risk analysis
In the next step , companies proceed with the risk analysis itself , taking POF and COF into consideration . After this assessment , companies see which inventory can pose the highest financial and safety risks . Therefore , organisations can focus on these assets and flexibly adjust their inspection and maintenance plans .
The overall goal is to mitigate the number of critical failures by optimising maintenance activities for high-risk equipment and saving resources on low-risk assets .
Manufacturing Technician vs Process Technician ( Source : GETRESKILLED )
There seems to be a lot of confusion between manufacturing technicians and process technicians . In summary :
Manufacturing Technicians work in Discrete Manufacturing – machine and / or assemble ( screws , bolts , welds , glues , rivets ) individual pieces into a distinct product , often on an assembly line . ( Think car assembly – Tesla ’ s production line for its electric cars , shipbuilding , cellphones , computers , aeroplanes , syringes , medical pumps , scalpels , pacemakers , etc .)
In a discrete manufacturing plant , you typically find , assembly lines , U-shaped assembly areas , machine tools , CNC machine centres , robots , welders , pick and place robots , injection moulding machines , packing machines , airpowered assembly tools , painting and finishing areas , etc .
Process Technicians work in Process Manufacturing – They take a formulation or recipe of ingredients and blend them using a chemical reaction , heat , cold , fermentation , etc ., continuously or in a batch into a final product which is usually a liquid , or powder or gas . ( Think turning milk into baby formula , oil refining , gasoline , plastic , cheese , butter , paint or pharmaceutical manufacturing .)
In a process manufacturing plant , you typically find piping , pumps , tanks , flow valves , steam valves , temperature gauges , boilers , vessels , reactor vessels , crackers , distillation columns , heat exchangers , boilers , steam pipes , autoclaves , clarifiers , decanters , fluidised dryers , Programme Logic Controllers ( PLCs ), PID ( Proportional Integral Derivative ) Controllers , conveyor belts , etc .
Skills Development ( Source : World Bank )
Global megatrends such as the rising role of technology , climate change , demographic shifts , urbanisation , and the globalisation of value chains are changing the nature of work and skills demands . To succeed in the 21 st t century labour market , one needs a comprehensive skillset composed of :
Cognitive skills , which encompass the ability to understand complex ideas , adapt effectively to the environment , learn from experience , and reason . Foundational literacy and numeracy as well as creativity , critical thinking and problemsolving are cognitive skills .
Socio-emotional skills , which describe the ability to navigate interpersonal and social situations effectively , and include leadership , teamwork , self-control and grit .
